Beginners Guide To Snapper in Port Phillip Bay Chapter 1

Hello, everyone! Today, I’ll be discussing everything you need to know to catch a snapper in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne. If you’re new to fishing and want to learn how to catch a snapper, this article is perfect for you. First, let’s talk about the essential tackle you’ll need, assuming you’ll be fishing from a boat.

Snappers are large fish that can weigh up to 10 kilos in Port Phillip Bay, and sometimes even larger. Therefore, it’s important to have the right gear to handle these fish. When it comes to choosing a rod and reel for bait fishing, fishing rods come in different sizes and lengths, with weight ratings in kilograms. A good weight rating for snapper is between 6-8kg up to 8-10kg. You’ll also have a choice between rods made from fiberglass or graphite.

As a beginner, you don’t need to worry too much about the differences between fiberglass and graphite rods. Simply choose one that suits your preference. Personally, I prefer graphite rods, but many people also use fiberglass rods, and both are suitable options. For boat fishing, I recommend a rod length of around 2 to 2.1 meters. That length works best for me, but you can adjust it based on your preference and comfort.

Now, let’s address the question of how much money you should spend on your fishing rod. I typically opt for mid-range fishing rods, as I believe you can get away with cheaper ones when targeting snapper. However, the story is a bit different when it comes to fishing reels. When selecting a reel, it’s crucial to have a smooth drag system. Many cheap reels tend to lock up, which means that when a snapper takes off with your line, the spool locks up, causing the line to snap and you losing the fish. Therefore, it’s important to invest a bit more money in a good fishing reel.

One affordable option that I often use is the Shimano baitrunner in Size 6000. Fishing reels also come in different sizes, and for beginners, the minimum size you should consider is 5000. However, you can also get away with a Size 4000 if needed.

Remember, fishing for snapper can be an exciting and rewarding experience. By choosing the right tackle, including a suitable rod and reel, you’ll increase your chances of success. Good luck out on the water!
